“If you serve too many masters, you'll soon suffer.” - Especially if your masters happen to be The CIA, the White House, and the Medellin drug cartel all at the same time …
American-made is a 2017 biographical, action movie about the life of Barry seal, a TWA Pilot who, was hired by the CIA, but also ended up working clandestinely for the American government, as well as the Medellin drug cartel. The movie also tells of his involvement in the Iran-Contra Affair. The main character, Barry Seal, is played by Tom Cruise (The mummy, Jack Reacher). Dominic Gleason stars as Monty Schafer, Barry’s somewhat dodgy CIA Handler. Kentucky born singer and actress, Sarah Wright, is Lucy, Barry Seal's wife and the mother of his children. The budget for the movie was an estimated 50 million dollars.
Barry Seal is an average regular guy, married with children, who works as a pilot for the TWA airline corporation. His job is tedious and boring, and to make a little extra cash he smuggles cigars for Cuban nationals. Unfortunately for him, the CIA catches him in the act. Surprisingly, instead of arresting him, the CIA agent (Monty Schafer) makes Barry a crazy and almost unbelievable offer - to go and work as a pilot for the CIA. Barry's skill in the cockpit soon elevates him and Schaefer to the higher levels of the CIA, but it also brings him to the attention of the drug cartels. Seal is surprised when instead of executing him, the leaders of the various cartels hire him to smuggle drugs and the other items for them, knowing full well that he can use his knowledge of the CIA and law enforcement to pull off seemingly impossible deliveries. For once in his life, Barry Seal’s star is burning brightly, but for how long? Will he be able to pull off this crazy feat of juggling, or will his life and everything he loves come crashing down around him?
I think that American-made might be one of the best Tom Cruise movies I've seen in a long while. Cruise plays the part of Barry Seal perfectly, first of all showing us the boredom of his life as a commercial pilot, and then how quickly his life becomes chaotic as he tries to please all of his many masters. Although the movie is biographical, there are actually a lot of comedy scenes in the movie, especially involving money. Dominic Gleason comes across really well as the shifty and shady CIA Handler. Seal really has no idea what this guy's up to, or does he really not care so long as the money is coming in? Even though we have to remember that this guy was smuggling tons of cocaine into America, the results of which would probably have made hundreds of thousands of lives miserable through addiction, you often find yourself rooting for him as you watch his antics throughout the movie - especially the aerial scenes, where he pulls off quite daring escapes from the DEA and American Coast Guard. If you like Tom Cruise movies, you’re going to love American Made’s mix of suspense, action, and comedy. There are times where the movie can seem a little slow, but the other parts of the movie more than make up for this. Another movie to add to your list of ones to see in the very near future, it's popcorn and soda time once again!
