Oren’s brother is coming back home, piece by piece - a finger, a spine, a toe …
Coventry, California - Josh and his older brother ,Oren, were inseparable, best buddies who did everything and anything together. But, all that changed one fateful day, when the two brothers entered the forest together, but only one of them returned. What had happened to Josh? Despite an exhaustive search of the surrounding woods, no sign was ever found of him. After serving as a crime investigator for the US Army, Oren is finally returning home. But nothing can prepare him for the surprise awaiting at his family home. Someone has been sending back his younger brother, one piece at a time. His father, retired judge Henry Hobbs, has been receiving bones and assembling them in Josh’s old bedroom. The questions on Oren’s mind are.. Who is doing this, and why? Drafted in to help the incompetent Coventry chief-of-police with the investigation, Oren races to uncover the clues to solve the mystery surrounding his brother’s disappearance, a task a lot easier than it sounds. The people who live in the town of Coventry have many ghosts and skeletons hiding in their closets, and many of these people don't want their dirty laundry washed in public. There are layers upon layers of secrecy that Oren is going to have to fight his way through if he wants to finally discover once and for all what happened to Josh, and why?
I think that this is the first Carol O’Connell book I have read, and I enjoyed it immensely . From the first page, the bizarre story of Oren’s younger brother’s disappearance starts to slowly unfold. The questions start coming thick and fast, the principal ones being; Who killed Josh?, Why was Oren sent away by his father?, and what exactly does the retired judge know about all of this? The characters throughout the story are well fleshed out, almost everyone seems to have some secret they are keeping, or some gossip they want to share, usually for a price. On top of everything, a special agent by the name of Sally Polk also seems to be investigating the case, what connects her to the case? Clues start to unravel themselves, but which can he trust and which can be discarded? Just as you think you are starting to get things figured out, something happens that throws a spanner in the works. Bone by bone is definitely a page turner, I managed to burn though the book In a couple of bus journeys to work. It’s one of those books that you find once in a while that you just can’t seem to put down, you have just got to get to the end as soon as possible to find out who dunnit, and more importantly, why? If you keep a list of books you want to read next, and you are crazy for whodunnits, you should add O’Connell’s Bone by bone you most definitely won’t be disappointed.
