"It's said the dreams can be a window to the future, but what do we do when our dreams become reality?
Extinction is a 2018 sci-fi, action movie that was filmed exclusively for Netflix. Extinction was Directed by Ben Young, who has previously produced Hounds of love. The movie stars Michael Peña (A Wrinkle in Time, Narcos) as Peter, a married man who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams of the future Peter’s wife, Alice, is played by Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield). Their two daughters are played by Amelia Crouch, and Erica Tremblay. Extinction was filmed on location in Belgrade, Serbia. The total time to shoot the movie was just 40 days.
Peter has serious problems sleeping. Night after night, he is awoken by terrifying dreams of the world he knows coming to a seemingly apocalyptic ending. He has visions of an alien force invading the planet and slaughtering the entire human population. His wife, Alice, is becoming tired of trying to convince him to talk to a specialist about these dreams, as it is starting to affect his family life, as well as his work. During an evening with friends and family, Peter starts to see strange lights flickering in the night sky above their apartment building. As their friends and children run outside to view the spectacle, they are terrified to see alien spacecraft dropping down through the clouds and launching an attack on buildings surrounding them. Peter stands and stares open-mouthed as he realizes that his dreams are coming true and the nightmares that he sees every night are starting to happen all around him. It doesn't take long before the alien invaders start moving through the buildings, systematically wiping out the human survivors. It’s up to Peter and Alice to save Hannah and Lucy, but will they be able to? With the planets military seemingly defenseless against the alien threat, can they pull off the impossible?
Netflix are really starting to make a lot of their own movies, and I believe that it's a move that’s really starting to pay off for them too. Although this story is yet another alien invasion type movie, there is a great twist at the end! They also did a fantastic job of the special effects, even though these movies don't have the multimillion-dollar budgets of the big blockbusters. While there have being other family survival / alien invasion movies, for example, Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds, Extinction does a great job of showing Peter’s family trying to survive the crisis without all of Dakota Fanning's annoying screeching every 5 minutes. All of the principal actors do a fantastic job with their roles. Michael Peña is really starting to appear in a lot of movies now. Also, it was nice to see Lizzy Caplan in another movie, especially after her performance in Cloverfield. The end of the movie did leave the possibility of a sequel being made; personally I would like to see a second movie to finish the story started in Extinction. If you like science fiction movies, Extinction is definitely one that you should add to your list of films to watch. How long will it take for you to figure out what's really going on in the movie?"
